M97 - The Owl Nebula
The Owl Nebula is a faint planetary nebula in Ursa Major. The Messier Index - M97 states that "its appearance has been interpreted as that of a cylindrical torus shell (or globe without poles), viewed oblique, so that the projected matter-poor ends of the cylinder correspond to the owl's eyes." Above and to the right can be seen a faint galaxy (PGC34279) behind a superimposed star. This 5 July 1997 image is a 24-minute composite exposure of 72, 20-second images.
