NGC4567 and NGC4568

NGC 4567 and NGC 4568

NGC4567 and NGC 4568 are Sc-type elliptical galaxies in the constellation Virgo and are commonly known as the "Siamese Twins".  It is not known whether these two galaxies are actually interacting or merely lie in line of sight with each other from our vantage point.  Burnham's Celestial Handbook points out that "there is no sign of tidal filaments or distorted structure as is often found in gravitationally interacting pairs."

NGC4567 is the smaller galaxy to the upper right in this image and is magnitude 12.1.  NGC4568 is the longer galaxy on the left at magnitude 11.9.

This image is a composite of 58, 15-second images taken on 16 May 1999.
