NGC 4565

NGC 4565

NGC 4565 (C38) is an Sb-type spiral galaxy, seen edge-on from our vantage point, in the constellation Coma Berenices.   This galaxy is at a distance of approximately 31 million light years.  Burnham's Celestial Handbook remarks that this is "the largest of the edgewise spiral galaxies, and undoubtedly the most famous object of its type."  Note the prominent dark band along the length of the galaxy.  This dark absorption matter is a common feature in spiral galaxies, including our own galaxy - The Milky Way.
