M99 (NGC4254) is an Sc-type, spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices and is a member of the Virgo Cluster. It is located at a distance of approximately 60 million light years. This galaxy rotates clockwise (unlike M100) and as noted at the Messier Index, the nucleus is shifted to the upper end of this image possibly due to recent encounters with other members of the Virgo Cluster. More information and additional images of this galaxy can be found at the Messier Index - M99.
This is a 15-minute composite image from 60, 15-second exposures taken on 21 May 1999.
