M17 - The Omega Nebula
M17 - The Omega Nebula is located in the constellation Sagittarius. This is an area of recent or continuing star formation located approximately 5000-6000 light years away. This nebula is also sometimes called the Swan Nebula, the Horshoe Nebula, or the Lobster Nebula. More information about this nebula can be found at the Messier Index - M17.
The above image is a combination of a 108-minute unfiltered image, a 50-minute Hydrogen Alpha-filtered exposure and 25 minutes of red, green and blue-filtered exposures. The image was captured using a William Optics FLT110 4.3" f/7 refractor with an SXV-H9 CCD camera on the evenings of 9, 10 and 11 August 2008. Below is the 50-minute Hydrogen Alpha-filtered exposure showing detail in this emission nebula.
A 30-minute color film (Fuji-800) image of this nebula obtained on 31 July 1997 is shown below.
