Cygnus - Northern Cross
This is the Northern Cross asterism in the constellation Cygnus. It lies along the Milky Way and is in the direction along the Orion arm of our galaxy. This arm is where our solar system is located within the Milky Way Galaxy. Horizontally along this image can be seen a dense region of stars populating this spiral arm and below this can be seen a dark rift of obscuring dust clouds. The reddish patch seen to the left in the image is the North America Nebula (NGC7000), so called because of its distinctive shape. This image is a 19 August 1995, 20-minute exposure on hypered Fuji Super HG400 with an Olympus OM-1 and 50mm lens at f/2.8.
