This is the Northern Cross asterism in the constellation Cygnus.  It lies along the Milky Way and is in the direction along the Orion arm of our galaxy.  This arm is where our solar system is located within the Milky Way Galaxy.  Diagonally along this image can be seen a dense region of stars populating this spiral arm and above this can be seen a dark rift of obscuring dust clouds.  The reddish patch seen to the right in the image is the North America Nebula (NGC7000), so called because of its distinctive shape. The annotated negative image below shows the outlines of the constellations Cygnus and Lyra.  This image is from a 20-minute exposure on hypered Kodak PPF400 with a Nikon N2000 and Nikkor 35mm lens at f/3.3.
